I usually didn’t let what other people thought about me get under my skin. I was comfortable with who I was and didn’t see anything wrong with the way that I lived my life.

My sister Kendra, on the other hand, cared way too much about what everyone thought, and it shaped her every move. It was painfully obvious to me that she calculated and planned everything she did. She did this not to be organized, but to ensure that those around her thought she was the most amazing person ever. The bad thing was that she was actually quite a terrible person. She put herself on a pedestal by putting those around her down in a passively aggressive way, and I’d endured my fair share of that.

And though I realized that it must have come from some deep-seated need for attention, I still tried to spend minimal time with her to prevent injury to myself. This was because she was one of the only people who actually knew how to hurt me with words and opinions.

So when her name popped up on my phone for a video call as soon as I got home from work, I groaned and considered throwing my phone against the wall so that I could claim my phone was broken. Because that was the only logical thing to do.

Taking a deep breath, I decided against damaging my phone, and I tapped the answer button.

“Phoebe!” She yelled at her phone in excitement, as though she were actually happy to see me.

“Kendra!” I said back with less enthusiasm.

“How are you? How is work? Did you find a man in the Maldives?” She asked in succession. It had been over a month since I had gone on vacation, and this was the first time she asked about it. It was also the first time we’d even talked, because she usually only called me when I was at work. Kendra knew that I worked during the week, but I knew she called me just to point out that her stay-at-home-mom life was superior and try to make me jealous. But the thought of being at home all day with her two demon children wasn’t envy-provoking in the slightest.

“Work is great, I’m great, and no, I didn’t find a man in the Maldives,” I said monotonously, thought the last statement wasn’t exactly true. I came home from Malé with a man, but he wasn’t from there, so did it really count as a lie?

“Bummer! I was really praying that you would finally get someone to make you a real woman!” Her syrupy sweet tone sounded like acid to me with those words, and I wished it was possible to bitch-slap someone through the phone. I wasn’t even a violent person, but sometimes I thought that a slap would do my sister some good. I could hear her children in the background, and she turned to sweetly say something to Elle. Her face showed annoyance for a split second before she looked back at her camera.
